The brutal conflict in Tigray displaced millions of people and decimated health services. For women who faced complications in childbirth, it meant there was nowhere to go for help. Many walked for hours – sometimes days – to the nearest clinic, only to find them looted and empty or rapidly running out of supplies.

You could help equip Maternal Health Ambassadors, who travel into remote communities, identify pregnant women at risk, and help them access care at their nearest clinic.
The journey to a clinic can be lengthy and gruelling, which is why your support is also needed to help build and restore maternity waiting homes. These shelters mean that women can wait for labour safely and comfortably, with easy access to healthcare professionals when they need it.
And once a woman goes into labour, your support also makes sure clinics have the maternal health supplies they need to help women give birth safely.

Elilta knows first-hand the heartbreak of not being able to access maternal healthcare.
Days before she was due to give birth, the health centre she was relying on was targeted and destroyed. When she faced complications with her labour, there was nowhere to go for medical care. Elilta lost her baby.
Thanks to supporters like you, Elilta eventually received support from Ethiopiaid’s partners to recover from her ordeal. And now she’s made it her mission to ensure other mothers won’t have to go through what she did.
Today, Elilta is a Maternal Health Ambassador – helping mothers to give birth safely, to happy, healthy babies.
