Families in Ethiopia’s Afar region are facing a devastating humanitarian crisis. Earthquakes and renewed conflict have forced more than 18,000 people from their homes, leaving families without food, clean water, shelter or medical care. Hunger is reaching catastrophic levels, with thousands of children at risk of severe malnutrition. Fewer than 3% of children are eating enough.
Your support today can help ensure families, mothers and children are not left completely without care in this desperate time.

The APDA team is working to reach as many people as possible. But they urgently need more resources.
Haddi is a Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) in one of the most remote parts of Afar – a place where some mothers live days from the nearest health centre.
Even now, despite hunger, conflict and collapsing services, Haddi walks for hours between isolated communities to check on pregnant women and help mothers deliver their babies safely.
Before receiving training from the APDA team, Haddi believed the deaths she witnessed in childbirth were simply “the will of God”.
"I have seen mothers labouring for days, too weak in the end to cry out. I have seen them and their baby perish, with silence and tears where there should have been joy and a baby's first cry."
Recently, Haddi saved the life of a young girl whose labour had become high risk because of complications from female genital mutilation (FGM). Recognising the danger signs, Haddi persuaded the family to make the long and dangerous journey for emergency care.
But women like Haddi cannot save lives alone.
