Maternal Healthcare and Obstetric Fistula

Strengthening maternal health

· Strengthening maternal health services for women across Ethiopia · Preventing and treating childbirth injuries · Helping women access the care they need to give birth safely and equipping them to make informed decisions about their own health ·

19,000 people learned of the causes, treatment, and prevention of the devastating childbirth injury obstetric fistula, through four marketplace events.

58 women received surgical treatment for obstetric fistula, along with counselling, literacy classes, and a clean, new dress for their return home.

752 women living in rural areas attended antenatal sessions, with the support of our partners’ midwives and Safe Motherhood Ambassadors (SMAs).

For safer communities and lasting change

· Protecting women and girls and making their voices heard · Stopping harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage · Preventing and treating cervical cancer ·

40 survivors of sexual and gender-based violence participated in business skills training, and guidance and counselling sessions.

448 women stayed at WOHE’s cancer care house, enabling them to receive treatment they would otherwise be unable to access or afford.

22,992 women were screened for cervical cancer, with 1,764 women receiving treatment, and over one million people were made aware through radio broadcasts.

Together through crisis

11,000 people received emergency support after heavy rain caused landslides in the Gamo Zone of southern Ethiopia.

Over 400 children displaced by conflict were treated for malnutrition, receiving nutritious meals and ongoing care.

Over 5,000 families received storable, concentrated animal feed to protect their herds through droughts.

Health and Welfare

Ensuring no one is forgotten

· Providing specialist healthcare, support and education · Creating equal opportunities for children and adults living with disabilities · Preventing and treating neglected tropical diseases · Protecting dignity and providing care for older people, and end of life care ·

2,409 people were treated for podoconiosis, receiving counselling and health advice, and custom-made shoes.

410 people received home-based palliative care, improving their quality of life and easing the strain on their families.

1,100 older people living in extreme poverty received a monthly pension of 800 birr (around £3.70), and a set of new clothes.
