Transforming lives in Ethiopia

54% of women in the Gurage region still give birth at home, alone.

In rural Gurage Zone, south-western Ethiopia the risk of unrest is high, the rainy season causes roads to be quickly flooded and washed away, leaving communities cut off for days or weeks at a time, with frequent power outages. It really brings home the many difficulties our partners face when working in remote and rural communities.

For pregnant women, even mild complications can rapidly become catastrophic with, increased cases of obstructed labour leading to obstetric fistula. Death of both mother and newborn is a reality for many.

Our partner’s Midwives on the Move programme ensures women can receive home visits from their midwife.

Will you help bring life-saving maternal healthcare to women, when they need it most?

How will my gift
help women and babies?

By improving access to maternal health services, our partners are saving the lives of mothers and babies, preventing the childbirth injuries that are so prevalent with prolonged, unassisted labour and offering women choices in childbirth.

Hana's story

With her husband working away from home, Hana was exhausted and struggling to take care of her family, herself and her pregnancy. With our partner’s Clinic an hour’s walk away, Hana was so grateful when the midwives explained they were able to visit her at home; even more so when they realised her baby was growing above the expected rate, which can be a sign of complications and required close monitoring.

Hana’s son was born safely, but her labour was not without risk. It turned out that she had a very big baby, 12lbs to be exact! Hana was left with a third-degree tear but with guidance from experienced midwife Atsede, avoided any other potential complications.

Hana went home with her beautiful son and was visited by her midwives over the following days and weeks – she is healing well, and her baby is happy and healthy.

By Hana’s own admission, it is likely that she would not have travelled to a health facility for her antenatal care nor for her birth. Given the size of her baby, this could have had a very different outcome.
