Tragically 93% of women who develop an obstetric fistula lose their baby during labour.

What is fistula? Obstetric fistula is a devastating birth injury, caused by a tear or hole in the delicate tissue between a woman’s birth canal and bladder or rectum following a long obstructed labour.

Not only do women face a future of incontinence, but they can be subject to severe social stigma. Many women battle serious mental health issues and many marriages do not survive.

But we can make a difference. Our maternal health partners are working to find and treat women who are living with fistulas and to improve access to maternal healthcare across Ethiopia.

How will my donation help save the lives of women and babies?

The survival of pregnant mothers and their babies is reliant on access to quality maternal care and skilled midwives.

Our maternal health partners are training more midwives, skilled birthing attendants and Safe Motherhood Ambassadors. By providing access to antenatal care, trained midwives during childbirth, and care and support post-birth, they are not only saving lives, but also healing traumatised women left with life-changing fistula and pelvic injuries.

The months of conflict have seen many rural health centres destroyed or ransacked. Our partners report a resulting increase in stillbirths, post-natal deaths and obstetric injuries.

A fistula surgery costs around £530. Your contribution and support this Christmas can help, as we continue working to reach the 30,000 women estimated to still be living with this devastating condition.

Please donate today so that we can continue this life-saving work.
