Earlier this year the maternity clinic so lovingly built over many years of hard work by our partners Indie and Atsede – a place of safety and joy for mothers – was destroyed by fire. A neighbour’s cooking fire spread quickly to the wattle-and-daub walls. Before we knew it, the clinic was gone.
Thankfully, no one was hurt and the mother who had given birth just an hour before was helped out in time, cradling her newborn.
The sooner we rebuild the clinic, the sooner mothers can give birth in a clean, safe building. Work needs to commence in January before the tents become unusable. Women and babies deserve better than a tent.
Will you give a special Christmas gift today to ensure mothers have a safe place to welcome new life?
The fire was a setback, but it will not be the end. This winter, we are inviting our Ethiopiaid community to come together to rebuild Atsede Clinic and restore community confidence. A robust, rebuilt clinic equipped with solar power can withstand future disruptions. Clean, equipped delivery rooms can reduce preventable deaths.
5 gifts of £1,100 could equip the new maternity suite with solar energy – bringing reliable light and power for new deliveries.
Your gift of £653 could cover a month’s salary for a senior midwife to bring life-saving support to women living in remote areas.
10 gits of £435 could fill up the Midwives on the Move kit bags with outreach essentials.
Your gift today can help ensure mothers have a safe place to welcome new life, for generations to come. If you would like to know more about how your gift helps, or you would like more information about the clinic budget, please get in touch at partnerships@ethiopiaid.org.uk
This Christmas, bring comfort and joy
to mothers and newborns.
Thank you.

In 2016, English midwife Indie joined the staff at Attat Hospital in south-western Ethiopia, where Atsede, 2019 International Midwife of the Year, led the midwifery services. It was a meeting that would change their lives. Their close professional relationship, and deep personal friendship, led to them opening a birth centre serving the Gurage women and families of Cheha Woreda, bringing compassionate midwifery care into the heart of traditional communities.
