I met Sir Alec when he first came to Ethiopia in 1987. I was the Field Director there for Save the Children Fund UK. We had many visitors, some of whom had little practical to offer. He seemed to me to be genuinely motivated to help and had a practical approach. I strongly supported his policy of assisting local ngos. This why I am now a supporter of Ethiopiaid. Sir Alec was a good man who had a strong sense responsibility. I admired him and send my commiserations to his family.
