The Lifetime Fund has been launched in memory of Ethiopiaid’s founder, Sir Alec Reed CBE, and in celebration of the lifetime of philanthropy he dedicated to Ethiopia. Sir Alec will be greatly missed by all of us at Ethiopiaid and we will continue to be inspired by his values and approach. His amazing legacy will live on through all the people he has helped and through the future work of our partners in Ethiopia.
As we celebrate the legacy of Sir Alec’s life, we invite you to watch this video, made in 2019 to mark Ethiopiaid’s 30th anniversary. He reflected on his journey, the relationships he built, and his deep appreciation for our committed supporters.
Sir Alec believed that Ethiopian organisations were best placed to understand and support their own communities. The trust he placed in Ethiopian partners was an inspiration. The strength of this empowering approach is now widely adopted by other charities. He championed causes that were often overlooked like support for people living with disabilities, children living on the streets and older people facing destitution.
It is all too easy to become invisible in Ethiopia. In rural Ethiopia children born with disabilities are often seen as cursed and face stigma and exclusion, not just from their schools and communities but even from their own families.
Conditions that are recognised and treated early in the UK go unseen in rural Ethiopia. People are unaware that treatment is possible, or can’t afford to travel, leaving them excluded and isolated from the care they need. It becomes nearly impossible to earn money and live independently with limited mobility.
With your support, they can reach more children like Amina and Maryam, sisters who were both born with bilateral clubfoot. Excluded from school and hidden away, their parents didn’t know where to turn.
A team of healthcare experts at Cheshire Ethiopia helped them with specialist support, surgery to help them walk and counselling. Surrounded by other children with similar experiences, they began to feel seen.
This could not have happened without the vital, but unsung, work of outreach teams who patiently build trust with communities year after year.
Thanks to supporters like you – Amina and Maryam will no longer be hidden and more people will have access to life-transforming healthcare.
